For South African, Annique and Rooibos (Red Bush) tea are household names. The Company was established in 1971 by Dr. Annique Theron and has grown from strength to strength. As early as the 1980’s Japanese and American scientists found that Rooibos (Red Bush) tea contains a powerful and stable antioxidant called Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD). Later researchers verified that Rooibos (Red Bush) tea has anti-allergic, anti-spasmodic, anti-bacterial, anti-ageing, anti-viral, anti-carcinogenic properties and that the tea contains no caffeine and low tannin. Even after numerous studies through the years the list of beneficial properties of Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is still growing and ongoing research is focusing on the application of both regular Rooibos (Red Bush) and Green Rooibos tea in health and skin care.
To honor Dr. Theron’s discovery of the anti-allergic properties of Rooibos (Red Bush) tea; she received the coveted Best Woman Inventor of the Year award at the 25th International Inventors Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland in 1997.
